Great Art Game

Great card game to teach art vocabulary and to apply the words to actual art works! Ready to print and cut! So easy to use and a wonderful way to reinforce vocabulary taught throughout the year.

Ever wonder how much your students actually learn in your art class? Will they be able to apply all the GREAT information you gave them? Well, here is a fun way to find out without all the pressure of testing! Because, let's face it, we've ALL had enough testing during the school year!

Students love to have fun. They love to play games and they love to win! This is an activity in which the students apply their knowledge in a game style atmosphere. Not only do they have to use the art vocabulary provided, but they actually have to prove knowledge by using the words correctly when talking about an artwork. The game also allows for different levels of knowledge and application. With each new level of difficulty, the student(s) can gain more points.

Here's how it works:

Look below at this sample of the cards included. You can see that there are three levels: 2 Points, 3 Points, and 5 Points.

The 2 Point level includes words that all students should be able to use accurately. For example: "In this artwork by van Gogh, he used mainly greens in the field in the front of the picture."

The 3 Point level requires a little more knowledge. For example: "In this artwork by van Gogh, he used neutral colors in the building and ground."

The 5 Point level requires even more knowledge. For example: "Van Gogh used a complementary color scheme in this picture by using reds and greens."

The goal of the game:

To increase the student’s vocabulary and understanding in a fun, competitive game!

How to play the game:

1 – Display an artwork or multiple artworks by any artist(s).  If you have multiple artworks to use in any given game, then you should have the students specify which artwork they are referring to by title and artist.
2 – Divide students into teams (I used the students at each table as a team). Give each team a chance at playing one round before coming back to the first team/table. Rotate around the table as the game proceeds so that every student has to participate.

Teacher Instructions:

You will receive 18 cards that can be printed, cut and laminated for durability. There are 3 pages of directions and a cover page. I used a small white Christmas box and glued the cover page on top. I placed the directions and the laminated cards inside.

Hang up a couple of art works and start the game/review!
